The Family Upstairs
I had been hearing about Lisa Jewell for some time and decided to try The Family Upstairs. The story jumps back and forth from the present, where a young lady, Libby, learns she has inherited a house associated with her real family, to the past, where a well-off family life goes from mainly normal to off-the-charts crazy, when a “cult-like” couple are invited to stay at the home for a while. I thought the author did a good job weaving past and present and allowing the story to enfold. It hit my checkmarks for a good mystery as I didn’t “guess” the ending too early, and kept turning the pages to find out more. There was a mini-twist at the end that seemed like it wasn’t really necessary for the story, but didn’t detract, either. This was a thoroughly enjoyable mystery and I will be sure to try more Lisa Jewell.
