This middle-grade debut by Janae Marks is highly recommended. The characters were engaging, especially Zoe who is a take charge, no-nonsense protagonist who loves to bake. When she gets a letter from her real father, whom she’s never met, and, uh oh, is in prison for a crime she learns is pretty bad, a correspondence ensues with Zoe’s investigative skills turning out to be pretty topnotch. Especially when she finds her biological dad may just be innocent. The relationships in the story are so well-written, the themes handled with grace, and the ending so satisfying. Well done Janae Marks!
